Leica Microsystems has strengthened its Electron Microscopy (EM) sample preparation business by acquiring Bal-Tec AG.
The optical company's acquisition was finalised on February 15th 2008.
Based in Liechtenstein, Bal-Tec AG develops, produces and sells instruments for sample preparation in scanning electron microscopy which Leica claims is an "excellent" match for its range of transmission microscopy products.
Coupled with its other EM preparation products, the purchase means that Leica boasts the world's most comprehensive product portfolio.
It claims to be the only supplier able to cover the entire sample preparation process in the electron microscopy laboratory for both biological and materials preparation.
Speaking about the acquisition, Stefan David, manager of Leica Microsystems in Vienna, said: "Electron microscopy sample preparation has an exciting future.
"Leica Microsystems was already a leader in key segments of the EM sample preparation market and now, with the acquisition of Bal-Tec AG, is consolidating its technological lead and extending its portfolio."
Leica Microsystems is a leading designer and producer of high-tech precision optics systems for the analysis of microstructures.
It is represented in more than 100 countries worldwide.See all the latest jobs in Science
