Senior Medical Writer

At present we are looking for a motivated Senior Medical writer to join our medical education team. This position will be embedded within the account team (rather than under an editorial director) so the candidate will need to proactively manage their own time and priorities, work well both in a team and autonomously.

This position is pivotal to our growing team so in addition to providing high quality editorial materials, the candidate will be required to assist with the scientific and strategic direction of the projects, support new business proposals and pitches, as well as mentoring less experienced team members with editorial projects.

Purpose of the role: To be involved in the scientific strategy, content development, delivery and medical writing team management for medical education projects, ensuring they are delivered in accordance with the project specification, budget and agreed schedule.



Key Responsibilities:

Medical Writing Skills:
• Clearly identify the communication objectives of a project by working with a more senior member of the account services team, or, if appropriate, by working directly with the client
• Deliver high quality medical writing, within agreed timeframes across a range of communications such as slide sets, journal manuscripts, marketing communications (e.g. newsletters, product monographs), meetings-related materials (e.g. abstracts, welcome letters) and new media (e.g. inter/intranet sites)
• Edit and proof copy to the highest standard (scientific and grammatical) across all these materials
• Ensure that content produced is scientifically accurate, clear, and appropriate to the target audience and in accordance with the preferred style
• Contribute to strategic plans, proposals and issues documents to support client objectives
• Provide suitable original illustrations to accompany text and where applicable, ensure that permission to use illustrations has been obtained from the publisher/author
• Assist in briefing freelancers
Attend and support the delivery of scientific meetings including pre-meeting and on-site activities, including travel where necessary
• Attend and begin to lead client or faculty meetings or discussions where content development is discussed
• Check references to ensure their accuracy and validity
• Prepare submission packs for manuscript submission
• Continuously develop an understanding of clients, the most recent data and the competitive environment

Client Service and Satisfaction:
• Proactively strengthen the client relationship through regular contact with client and/or faculty contacts on content development. Participate in client meetings and updates on project status, where appropriate
• Demonstrate a growing skill of client counsel, and scientific and strategic input.
• Identify data of interest to client and proactively share with client teams
• Professional liaison with pharmaceutical industry key contacts, healthcare professionals and other external service providers
• Influencing skills. Engage with and earn the respect of the client

Commercial, Financial and Project Management:
• Regularly feed information into the project lead about the status of projects
• Manage delivery of projects within time
• Be aware of allocated time on projects, flag to project lead when project is running over on time
• Alert the project team lead to potential problems by thinking ahead and discuss possible solutions by highlighting critical consideration to the team leader
• Explore opportunities to work on additional projects for existing clients
• Submit all timesheets in a punctual and accurate manner

Teamwork and Team Leadership:
• Inform team as to the status of content and participate as an active team member in team meetings
• Share relevant data with teams, with an awareness of strategic implications to current or future projects
• Develop line management skills where possible - conducting performance reviews, objective setting and career and development planning as well as regular one to ones with all direct reports
• Regularly engage in dialogue with colleagues to ensure an accurate view and understanding of their workload, priorities, deadlines and overall well being
• Maintain regular communication with junior team members ensuring the team operates in most effective and efficient way to meet client needs
• Provide advice and constructive feedback on team’s work
• Act as a coach and mentor to junior colleagues, creating a collaborative environment that encourages productive team relationships
•Conduct interviews for prospective candidates; use the recruitment process to enhance the reputation of the agency
• Conduct lunch and learns on new data, conference updates and/or editorial processes where appropriate

Person Profil

Senior Medical Writer - Rheumatoid Arthritis focused

The SMW candidates should have 5-8 years leading scientific experience with high acumen for developing and leading Med Ed programmes. The perfect candidate is someone looking to step up and join a successful Med Ed group and act as a mentor to others. Confident client facing skills and proactive approach in the development of leading promotional and medical programmes. Also the SMWs would ideally have a strong agency background working at a major agency covering both EU and or Global accounts.
